What identification do I need for a notary appointment?

Accepted Answer

You must provide valid, government-issued photo identification showing your name, signature and date of birth.  Examples include:
Driver's license
Passport
Ontario photo card
Permanent resident card
The name on your identification should match the name on the document being notarized or commissioned.

Can documents be notarized virtually?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Certain documents may be commissioned or notarized virtually through secure videoconferencing technology, where permitted by Ontario law and professional rules.

You will still need valid photo identification, access to a camera and microphone and electronic copies of your documents.

Do all parties need to attend the appointment?

Generally, every person whose signature must be witnessed or commissioned should attend the appointment and present identification.

If multiple parties are signing from different locations, separate arrangements may be required.

Please ensure documents are completed (but not signed) before the appointment unless instructed otherwise.

A Commissioner for Taking Affidavits may administer oaths, affirmations and declarations for certain documents.

A Notary Public can generally perform those functions as well as:
certify true copies,

and notarize documents for broader domestic or international use.
